Pulse Marketing

Pulse Marketing is an award-winning, full-service marketing and advertising agency based in Sydney. The agency provides strategy, advertising, branding, online, design, direct marketing, activations, media buying and campaign management services.

2010 saw the agency receive numerous awards including the Australian Marketing Institute’s NSW Effectiveness Award for the “Natural Gas. The Natural Choice.” integrated campaign, which also took out five awards at the 2010 Summit International Creative Awards.

Lauren Brown, founder and Managing Director of Pulse Marketing, and winner of NSW Business Chamber’s Young Businessperson of the Year 2010, shares her insights on running a successful business, the importance of being a member of NSW Business Chamber and why she loves going to work each day…

What is your background and role in the business?

I began my marketing career with one of the world's most recognised brands, McDonald's, working in the company's Head Office Marketing Department. But in 2003, keen to test my entrepreneurial skills, I started my own full-service marketing and advertising agency, Pulse Marketing. Pulse Marketing has been recognised and awarded by the marketing community, most recently with seven combined Australian Marketing Institute (AMI) and Summit International Creative Awards. I have also helped to attract and maintain a growing list of clients such as Jemena Natural Gas, Coca Cola Amatil, News Limited, AV Jennings, American Express and Willoughby City Council.

What strengths and achievements resulted in you receiving the NSW Business Chamber’s Young Businessperson of the Year award?

Determination, discipline and a focus on where I want to take the business has been my strength to date. Achievements like the NSW Business Chamber Young Business Person of the Year are accolades that encourage and motivate me to the next business milestone.

It’s also encouraging for the Pulse Marketing team to see recognition for their combined hard work in growing the agency, and establishing strong marketing campaigns for their clients.

What makes you want to go to work in the morning?

To stretch goals! I am constantly extending the goal posts, and make sure that, just as I am about to reach a success milestone, that I set another one.

These milestones are all around growth – of the agency, of client results, of the staff and their personal career growth, and of Pulse Marketing’s offering.

What recent business or personal achievements, successes or wins, have helped grow your business or raised your profile locally, nationally or overseas?

2010 really was ‘the year of the awards’ for Pulse Marketing. Having never entered any business or creative awards before, it was such amazing recognition to receive personal, business, creative and marketing effectiveness awards.

However, growing our existing client relationships and establishing new ones has been the greatest achievement for Pulse Marketing. It’s helped the business really grow over the last 12 months. New clients partnering with Pulse Marketing include News Limited, Rinnai, Barilla Pasta, UWS College, American Express and NSW Compensation Lawyers.

Pulse Marketing is growing, and because we can act fast, bring big ideas to the table, and are a reliable marketing partner, big business is knocking on our door and wanting to partner with us.

What NSW Business Chamber services or products have you used and how have these helped the business?

I attend the networking and information functions that are put on by NSW Business Chamber. Having spoken at one of the events late last year, it has meant that I am being approached by NSW Business Chamber members for marketing advice and as a sounding board for their business.

The website is regularly referred to for advice around IR and OHS, as well as industry awards and business guidelines. And my Account Manager is always on hand if I need help with anything.

Has your membership of NSW Business Chamber enhanced your business activities?

Absolutely. Other NSW Business Chamber members have found us and been in touch, as well as providing tools and resources to ensure we are following business best practice.

How has winning an NSW Business Chamber Annual Award helped your business?

The NSW Business Chamber Award has been an important part of the growth formula over the last year. Since October 2010, Pulse Marketing has experienced rapid new client growth, including an unprecedented run of 50% client growth in just two weeks. We’re also continuing to diversify our work with current clients, with new campaigns launching soon.

Is there anything in the business world that is keeping you awake at night?

I enjoy the pace and challenges of a growing company. Growth means change, and sometimes that can be daunting. However, with Pulse Marketing going through a growth spurt over the last three years, I have become comfortable with change, and find it motivating and positively challenging. So there’s no sleepless nights for me, I need my rest!

Is there anything in the business world that is exciting you?

If you don’t learn something new every day, then you shouldn’t have got out of bed! So that means that I am constantly surrounding myself with other business people to ensure I am learning about anything new that impacts on business. This could range from social media and digital marketing, through to government catalysts that may impact on a client’s industry. Talk about business and you have got my undivided attention. Tell me something new about business, and I’m captivated!
