NSW Business Chamber says the Commission of Audit (Schott Report) is an important building block in making the NSW Government deliver better services and operate more efficiently.
“This Report was one of the key planks in our successful “10 Big Ideas to Grow NSW” campaign in the lead up to last year’s State election,” NSW Business Chamber, CEO, Stephen Cartwright said.
“The then Opposition committed to undertaking the audit, and true to their word, when they came to power it was one of their first priorities – so credit must go to the Premier and Treasurer for driving this initiative.
“The audit’s findings show what the business community has known for a long time – the public service in NSW is in need of an overhaul in order for strategic measures to be achieved.
“The fact that the Report showed a low level of importance was placed on financial, people and asset management is a major concern. Any business that held such a low regard for these vital cogs would quickly go broke.
Mr Cartwright said the challenge now for the Government is to implement the recommendations to ensure the State got back on track.
“Just like in the building industry where the foundations are the most important part of construction, so too is it in Government, that the structures need to be in place to allow for service delivery.
“Anything that is built on shaky foundations, like a house of cards, will collapse soon enough. The business community of NSW can’t afford for that to happen.
The NSW Business Chamber is eagerly awaiting the further report by the Commission that will examine aspects of service delivery throughout the Government.
“The business community is constantly frustrated by the way it interfaces with Government and how services continue to let them down.
“We are all hoping that the Review charts a clear course to ensure service delivery is a deliverable and achievable priority for the O’Farrell Government,” Mr Cartwright said.
