Advocacy successes

2011 has been a year of historic change for NSW and a year of bold action for the NSW Business Chamber.

We started 2011with a strong and controversial message for the next government of NSW – NSW Deserves Better.

We put that message on the side of a bus and drove it around NSW throughout the month of February in the lead up to the State Election.

We met with local chambers of commerce, businesspeople, and community representatives along our journey and they wholeheartedly supported the NSW Business Chamber’s campaign to lift the performance of our state government.

With the seismic shift in NSW politics that saw the ‘super landslide’ election of the O’Farrell Government, the NSW Business Chamber has been able to achieve the implementation of a number of our 10 Big Ideas to Grow NSW – the campaign we ran during 2010 and are still driving hard.

Infrastructure NSW, an audit of government finances, a fairer share of the GST, stronger funding for hospitals, a single transport agency and a Small Business Commissioner are some of the big ticket government policies we’ve been able to achieve.

While 10 Big Ideas and NSW Deserves Better have dominated the headlines of newspapers, television and radio across NSW, we’ve been working hard on a range of other issues that are important to our community.

The advocacy of the NSW Business Chamber ensured that one of the first acts of the O'Farrell Government was to have new work health and safety legislation passed by the NSW Parliament. The new legislation has resulted in many important changes to workplace safety law in NSW that will make the system fairer for employers.

The NSW Business Chamber has also achieved positive outcomes in areas of employment, education and training, infrastructure and transport, regional affairs, finance, and workplace relations.

We look forward to the challenges and opportunities in 2012.
