We take our social and environmental responsibilities seriously. As part of our commitment to creating a better Australia, the Chamber recognises that a productive and successful business community enables a more prosperous economy, which leads to better social outcomes for all.

The concept of ‘creating shared value’ is at the heart of our CSR program. Working with and in the business community, the Chamber is helping to improve long-term economic and social outcomes through a range of CSR initiatives.

Supporting education and training

From careers advisory services run by Australian Business Apprenticeships Centre, mentoring programs, pathways programs like Productivity Bootcamp, and apprenticeship and trainee support services such as Apprenticeships Support AustraliaSkillsroad, and Apprenticeships Careers Australia, the Chamber has a variety of programs and services aimed at assisting apprentices, trainees, indigenous youth and unemployed youth to access the skills and support they need to transition into the workforce.

Supporting our employees

As an employer of choice, whether it is a sausage sizzle, BBQ or event to celebrate Easter, Christmas or a birthday, the Chamber encourages staff across our 49 offices throughout Australia to actively engage in creating a positive workplace.

Part of this is an ethos of ‘giving back’. The Chamber matches any funds raised by employees to support various charities such as Cancer Council’s Biggest Morning Tea through to Red Cross’s Blood Drive.

The Chamber also recognises the important of a healthy lifestyle, and has introduced initiatives such as free flu vaccinations, fruit, discounts off health, and fitness programs to empower our staff to wellness.

Operating in a socially responsible and ethical manner

For the Chamber, it’s not only about minimising our own environmental footprint; it’s also about educating our members on how they can make a difference through their own CSR programs.

For example, our participation in the NSW Government Sustainability Advantage Program is assisting us and other organisations to increase competitiveness and improve profitability through better environmental practices.

Greenhouse Gas reduction

Since the baseline period 2011/12, emissions intensity per FTE employee has been cut by 44%, for each square metre of floor area it reduced by 38% and for each vehicle, emissions intensity fell by 26%.

To encourage sustainability amongst our members, we have also included an Excellence in Sustainability award within our annual Business Awards program.

Supporting the communities and cultures in which we operate

Engaging with, learning from, respecting and assisting metropolitan, regional and remote communities across Australia is an important part of what we do.

From flood assistance grants following the devastating Queensland and Northern NSW floods in 2011, through to scholarships to encourage and support young indigenous Australians into apprenticeships and employment, we’re responding to areas of need.

We are a proud supporter of Beyond Blue and sit on its Business Advisory forum to give feedback and advice on its services and resources.

A new DVD, Business in Mind, has been designed to assist small and medium sized businesses deal with stress and common mental health issues by highlighting the signs and symptoms of depression and anxiety.

The Chamber is supporting the implementation of the NSW Government’s Disability Inclusion Program to create a healthier, more productive society by promoting employment opportunities and raising awareness of disability across the business community.

The Chamber also aims to help make a difference to disadvantaged children at Christmas time via our NSW Business Chamber Christmas Toy Appeal. Charities supported in 2016 were The Salvation Army, Anglicare, HeartKids and Variety, and $1,124 worth of toys were purchased to help bring joy to children at this special time of year. In addition to helping children during the festive season and bringing smiles to children across the nation, it has many other benefits such as convenience, reduced wastage & emissions, and instant recognition.

Building sustainable communities

The Chamber is playing a key role in promoting the Western Sydney region to help close the skills gaps for employers, bolster the economy, address youth unemployment, improve infrastructure and relieve infrastructure pressure into the Sydney CBD.

Through the Sydney Business Chamber, we listen to businesses and work with government to ensure that issues needed to drive economic activity and the barriers threatening our competitiveness are prioritised on the public policy agenda so that Sydney achieves its potential as a competitive and sustainable global city.
