The NSW Government and the Illawarra Pilot Joint Organisation have worked with industry and other partners to develop a Youth Employment Strategy for the Illawarra Region (IllawarraYES). The strategy covers the Kiama, Shellharbour, Shoalhaven and Wollongong local government areas.
The strategy aims to connect young people with the right skills and qualifications needed to secure jobs within key industries across the region.
Since September 2017, IllawarraYES has assisted over 80 jobseekers connect to jobs that businesses were experiencing difficulty in recruiting.
Illawarra YES employment programs have evolved into a jobs brokerage model with each program being developed in collaboration with businesses and RTO’s across diverse industry sectors. Entry level skills are identified by employers and delivered as part of a program that includes skills training, work experience and employability skills directly aligned with real job opportunities. Ideally participants who gain employment will be further supported through traineeships and apprenticeships. The skill set delivered through Smart and Skilled Targeted Priorities equip jobseekers with the entry level skills required to commence work and is tailored to the needs of each industry. All IllawarraYES employment programs are linked to employment opportunities.
