Illawarra Business Chamber Executive Director, Chris Lamont, said the investment by GPT in Wollongong is already seeing increased activity in the city centre and more job opportunities particularly for young people in the region.
Retail represents the second largest employment sector in the Illawarra, contributing over $2 billion to the local economy each year. The sector provides employment for over 12% of the region’s working population.
“The investment by both GPT and David Jones in the Illawarra reflects their confidence in the continued growth and development of the region,” said Chris Lamont.
Retail is a highly competitive industry and this investment has been made conscious of the potential return of providing a premium retail experience for locals and visitors to the region.
“It is important the Illawarra provides more premium experiences and offerings within the region to attract and retain consumers. Shopping is an important component of the tourist experience and with another cruise ship due to arrive in January the enhancement of the CBD with this latest addition is extremely timely,” said Chris Lamont.
The new David Jones is also expected to support existing retailers in the Wollongong CBD with an increased number of shoppers visiting the city heart.
“The new range or retail brands and services will appeal to a broader demographic and this is important to inject more life and activity into the city,” said Chris Lamont.
“Congratulations to GPT and David Jones on this major refurbishment that continues the transformation of the Wollongong CBD,” said Chris Lamont.
