The Tourism Industry division has welcomed the Baird Government’s $12 million commitment to boosting tourism and major events in the Monaro region if re-elected on March 28.
“The State Government’s $12 million funding commitment to secure more events and increase tourism in Queanbeyan, Cooma, the Snowy Mountains and surrounding areas will help attract visitors during the shoulder seasons and provide a much-needed boost to the local economy,” said Dean Gorddard, Executive Manager of the Tourism Industry division of the NSW Business Chamber.
Given its proximity to Canberra and a major airport, there is a clear opportunity for the next NSW Government to build on the excellent work already being done by Tourism Snowy Mountains and realise the untapped visitor potential of the Monaro region.
Investing in the Monaro region to ensure it has the infrastructure and resources to bid for more major events and tourist attractions is a win-win for the local community. Attracting more festivals, conferences and sporting events will support local businesses and create jobs for those living in Queanbeyan, Cooma and the Snowy Mountains and ensure the region is a vibrant place to visit all year-round.
Investing in emerging tourist destinations in regional NSW is a key plank of the NSW Business Chamber’s recently released report, NSW Visitor Economy on the move.
If NSW is going to double overnight visitor expenditure by 2020, we need government working side by side with industry to ensure that plans for regional tourism are linked to areas with real growth potential such as the Snowy Mountains.
Most importantly, whichever party forms government on March 28 should commit to allocating greater funding for both direct and indirect tourism infrastructure to drive employment and economic growth in emerging tourism regions.
