The Illawarra Business Chamber has today welcomed further options provided by Roads and Maritime Services for slope stabilisation work on Lawrence Hargrave Drive at Stanwell Park in 2020, but has warned that the necessary road closures will still come at a cost for local businesses.
Today Roads and Maritime Services have presented four options – two more than originally offered – ranging from a full 2 month closure to a 16 day block, with a combination of closures during the working week, for 4-8 months, and night time works.
Presented with these options, the Illawarra Business Chamber has welcomed the government’s response to business sentiment which has seen it revisit its plans, but notes that impacts on business owners will still be felt during any road closures which remain extensive under all four options presented.
“I understand that these works are necessary, and that the closure has to proceed. However, for businesses located in Stanwell Park, Coledale, Austinmer, Thirroul and even Helensburgh, trade will undeniably be affected,” said Adam Zarth, Executive Director of the Illawarra Business Chamber.
“Of the four options presented, I believe Option D represents the best outcome for businesses and the community alike, as it represents the shortest total road closure period that will enable the road to be open during weekend peak visitation periods.”
“Option D will see a 16-day road closure during the winter school holidays plus full road closures on weekdays from 9am to 3pm and week nights from Sunday to Thursday from 8pm to 4am.”
“This proposal is reliant on residents voting in favour of night time closures to expedite the work and so we hope that the community supports businesses by voting in favour of an additional short-term inconvenience, in order to lessen the impact on businesses’ bottom line.”
