The Illawarra Business Chamber has welcomed the NSW Government’s commitment to a new Shellharbour Hospital, which will reportedly create 2,800 jobs during construction and provide significant opportunities for a wide range of local providers.

Executive Director of the Illawarra Business Chamber Adam Zarth said that the announcement presented an opportunity for the government to partner with local private sector health providers and benefit from the significant expertise at the University of Wollongong in delivering world-class health services at the new Hospital.
“This scale of infrastructure investment on its own is welcome, with the construction phase expected to create jobs and stimulate economic growth and recovery across the Illawarra,” said Mr Zarth.
“Local businesses will welcome the Premier’s commitment to utilising local supply chains during construction, and we will be urging the government to continue to support local throughout the development and operational life of the hospital.”
“The new hospital should establish firm partnerships with our excellent local health providers, such Ramsay Health Care, who operate several private hospitals across the Illawarra, and Healthe Care, who provide mental health services at South Coast Private.”
“In addition, the enviable academic expertise at the University of Wollongong, together with our own medical research capacity at the Illawarra Health and Medical Research Institute, should inform state-of-the-art healthcare at the new facility.”
“The Chamber looks forward to learning more about the expected timeframes and opportunities for local businesses to contribute to and leverage this development,” said Mr Zarth.
