Across the region, the drought continues to take its toll on businesses – a fact that showed up very clearly in our March Quarterly Business Conditions Survey.

The Murray region was one of the worst hit, with revenue, sales and profit all declining in the quarter. Not much is expected in the way of relief, so it’s a very important time for good policy and advocacy.

NSW Business Chamber works hard in that regard, conducting advocacy on behalf of members to ensure our region benefits from polices that support business – that support our communities.

Specifically, we are working on plans for regional infrastructure investment, on how government can assist in reducing the cost of doing business, while supporting skills development for our labour force.

The Chamber has had some big wins in that space. Including:

  • securing an increase in the payroll tax threshold
  • gaining an extension to the instant asset write-off
  • a border compensation mechanism for the Container Deposit scheme and successfully lobbying for a special activation precinct
  • new freight and logistics Hub infrastructure in the Riverina Murray
The Riverina is the heart of Australia’s food bowl, and this project will capitalise on the inland rail, and focus on advanced manufacturing, agribusiness, freight and logistics.

Seeking nominations to the Murray Riverina Regional Advisory Council

There is a lot going on and crucial to our policy and advocacy efforts are our Regional Advisory Councils (RAC). The Murray Riverina Regional Advisory Council provides the Chamber with advice on policy development and regional priorities. Every two years, Regional Councillors are elected to the Regional Advisory Council (RAC) and nominations are now open.

The RAC meets about three to four times per year and initiates and facilitates innovative projects and programs that improve and sustain business performance.

Regional Advisory Councillors must be financial members of the NSW Business Chamber, or be an authorised representative of an affiliated LCC. So if you are interested in joining our Murray Riverina RAC, I encourage you to email me via Andrew.Cottrill@nswbc.com.au for nomination by 24 May 2019.

Kind regards,

Andrew Cottrill – Regional Manager, Murray Riverina
