Are your staff on the correct pay? From 1 November 2018, casual retail staff will be entitled to 15% extra pay for Saturday work. Avoid potential fines by paying the correct rates from the get-go.

The commission handed down the decision under the General Retail Industry Award, one of the most complex to interpret, earlier this month.

The Saturday increase will bring casual workers total loading to 135% above the base award rate. And it doesn’t stop there. By 2020 they’ll be entitled to 25% Saturday penalty rates, on top of 25% casual loading, bringing their total pay to 150% of the base rate.

The immediate increase to Monday to Friday rates may seem insignificant but when coupled with the long trading hours over the Christmas-New Year period – with some retailers operating 24 hours a day – the financial impact could be substantial.

Incorrect pay rates are the number one trigger for workplace breaches and fines of up to $63,000 per business. Double check your pay rates before November 1 to avoid the hefty fine.
